Early Childhood Nutrition: The Building Blocks to a Thriving Preschooler
One of the best things a parent can give to his growing children is a nutritious diet. Early childhood nutrition influences all aspects of preschoolers their cognition, their motor development, and their relationship to their environment. These few years are crucial for brain and body development and therefore a proper combination of protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals lays the foundation for every child’s ability to focus, learn and develop friendships. In general children who eat properly usually come across as being more bright, more energetic and simply more curious than children who do not.
Fabulous meals are not needed to make a real difference to balanced meals for preschoolers.A simple plate of grilled chicken, mashed sweet potato, fresh fruit and a glass of milk can provide everything a young child needs to get through an active day. Protein helps build brain function and growing muscles. Carbs fuel play and learning. Energy that lasts. Fresh fruit provides vitamins to keep illness away and calcium to build bones and teeth during a key growth phase. Children who have access to good food are much better at focusing than children who don’t, and this naturally extends into how they perform in classroom activities and social interactions during the course of a day.
The secret to getting kids to really like healthy food is less rules, more experience. Kids who are exposed to lots of different colors, textures and flavors early on are much more likely to be adventurous eaters at the table. You give kids a chance to help with simple kitchen jobs like rinsing fruit off or picking between two veg and it makes them feel like they are part of it, but it is a real part of it. Healthy eating is something kids look forward to, not resist, with food-based fun learning activities for preschoolers, like sorting items by color or naming different food groups. These early positive experiences extend far beyond childhood and become habits.
Adults play a significant role in developing the way a child thinks of food. Teachers and parents who exhibit normal, calm eating settle into children’s minds as positive role models, creating powerful long-lasting messages regarding the way everyone is expected to eat during meal times. Adolescents have learned from their parents how to cultivate an environment where children can be fed in calm, positive ways. Children have also learned that they receive praise when they experiment and have success trying new foods. Daycare facilities that teach children about eating well (as part of their overall development), will help children build a healthy relationship with food and therefore be capable of building on previous success in academic areas, teaching children how to develop emotionally stable lives, and promote their global wellness.
